Ever since his candidacy for the municipal elections in 1998, Erik has been closely involved in politics and policy on a variety of levels.
As Vice-President and Political Secretary of the youth movement of D66, the liberal democratic party in the Netherlands, he was active in political debates and policy development and served as liaison officer with the D66 Cabinet members as well as groups in the Dutch and European Parliaments and with the media.
As coordinator of the Representatives Association of the party he executed the programme of this network of public officials. In Amsterdam Erik worked on the development of several election programmes, focusing primarily on public space and cultural policies - and was involved in a number of campaigns for municipal elections.
From 2006 to 2008 he served as member of the Amsterdam City Center Council. In 2003 Erik was student representative to the Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam and the Association of Universities in the Netherlands.
